Liverpool Football Club has appointed Virgil van Dijk as their new captain, with Trent Alexander-Arnold named vice-captain, following the departures of Jordan Henderson and James Milner. After eight years at the helm, Henderson passed on the armband upon his move to Saudi Pro League’s Al Ettifaq, where he reunites with former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, now the coach. Additionally, Milner’s transfer to Brighton meant the vice-captain role was vacant, which led to the decision to elevate academy graduate Alexander-Arnold to the position.
Expressing his emotions, Van Dijk said, “A really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling.” Having already served as captain for the Netherlands, the defender now relishes the honor of leading Liverpool. He vowed to do everything in his power to make everyone associated with the club proud and content.
Van Dijk’s journey with Liverpool began in 2018, and during his time, he has amassed over 200 appearances, securing numerous honors, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Community Shield.
On a separate note, Liverpool’s midfield undergoes changes, as Brazilian midfielder Fabinho completes his £40m move to Saudi Pro League’s Al Ittihad. Fabinho agreed to a three-year contract with the Saudi champions, owned by the country’s Public Investment Fund. Following Henderson’s move to Al Ettifaq, Fabinho becomes the second senior midfielder to join a Saudi Arabian club this summer.
Since his transfer from Monaco in 2019, Fabinho has been a key figure for Liverpool, making over 200 appearances and securing several trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, has orchestrated an overhaul in the midfield this summer. With the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai filling the gaps left by Henderson and Fabinho, Liverpool strives to maintain its competitive edge.
Furthermore, Liverpool has set its sights on Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, as they continue to strategize for the upcoming season. As the transfer window progresses, fans eagerly anticipate the team’s performance and potential future additions to bolster their squad.
