Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has officially left the club after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract. The Spanish shot-stopper departs Old Trafford as a free agent, bringing an end to his 12-year tenure with the Red Devils.
Taking to social media, De Gea expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Manchester United supporters, stating, “I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club.”
Reflecting on his time at the club, De Gea acknowledged the honor of representing Manchester United, describing it as a privilege bestowed upon only a few fortunate footballers. He also expressed his excitement for a new challenge and the opportunity to push himself in a different environment.
Erik ten Hag, who arrived as manager last summer, commended De Gea’s exceptional contribution to Manchester United. The goalkeeper earned the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets in the Premier League last season and was regarded as one of the club’s best in its history.
Ten Hag emphasized the difficulty of maintaining the level of performance required to play as a goalkeeper for Manchester United, especially considering the scrutiny that comes with the position. He praised De Gea’s numerous accolades and acknowledged his impact on the team during the manager’s first year at the club.
Teammate Bruno Fernandes also paid tribute to De Gea, highlighting his significant contributions to Manchester United’s history and expressing his admiration for the goalkeeper’s achievements.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea made a total of 545 appearances, surpassing the record for most appearances by a goalkeeper in the club’s history. He also broke Peter Schmeichel’s record for clean sheets last season, securing 190 shutouts in all competitions.
De Gea’s departure comes after months of negotiations with the club over a new contract. However, it is understood that Manchester United did not formally present terms to the goalkeeper. The decision to part ways was reached mutually by both parties.
With De Gea’s departure, manager Ten Hag now seeks a new number one goalkeeper for Manchester United. The club is engaged in positive discussions with Inter Milan regarding the signing of Andre Onana. While a fee has not yet been agreed upon, United is encouraged by the player’s willingness to join.
Additionally, there is a possibility that Dean Henderson, who spent the previous season on loan at Nottingham Forest, could return to Manchester United as the first-choice goalkeeper. Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper has expressed his interest in bringing Henderson back to the club.
Manchester United is also exploring options for a backup goalkeeper and has shown interest in Urawa Red Diamonds’ Japanese international, Zion Suzuki. The club’s pursuit of new goalkeeping talent reflects their determination to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season.
